How to ask R U OK?
Date: 2nd Sep 2024
Do you have a feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Trust your gut instinct and act on it. Starting a conversation with a friend, colleague, or family member can make a significant impact.
Start a conversation using these 4 steps:
1. Ask R U OK? You can say, “How are you travelling” or “You don’t seem yourself lately – do you want to talk about it?”
2. Take the time to listen to their challenges
3. Encourage action: “What do you think is a first step that might help you?” “Have you spoken to your doctor or a professional about this?”
Finally, check in with them and see how they’re doing.
And remember, take care of yourself too! If they’re not up for the conversation, consider connecting them with someone else in their support network.
To help you decide whether you’re ready to start a meaningful conversation, ask yourself:
Am I ready?
Am I prepared?
Picked my moment?
