Celebrating Connection to Country and Community

Commissioned by Walker Corporation and BIC Consolidated, Connections tells the story of the relationship between people, place and shared purpose. Created by Indigenous artist Tara Lloyd, the artwork pays deep respect to the Burramattagal People of Parramatta and celebrates the enduring connections that shape the precinct today.

Flowing through the piece is the Parramatta River, a lifeline that has sustained community, culture and movement for countless generations. Its pathways are echoed in the meeting place symbols, representing the coming together of knowledge, experience and vision. These gatherings speak to partnership, where voices are valued, relationships are nurtured, and collective strength is built.

The surrounding mountain forms an anchor for the work to Country, symbolising protection, continuity and the enduring presence of culture. They remind us that every step forward is built upon the foundations laid by those who have cared for this land since time immemorial.

People symbols woven throughout the artwork reflect a diverse yet connected community, with each individual contributing to a shared story. Together, they represent unity, collaboration and the importance of working side by side towards common goals.

Drawing inspiration from the colours of both BIC Consolidated and Walker Corporation, the artwork blends these palettes to reflect partnership in action. The tones also reference the natural elements of water and land, reinforcing the balance between the built environment and the living systems that sustain it. In doing so, they speak to sustainability, not only environmentally but also through enduring relationships, cultural respect, and future-focused thinking.

Beyond a traditional canvas, Connections has also been applied to Parramatta Square's precinct-cleaning trolleys, transforming everyday operational equipment into moving artworks that celebrate Country and community. By integrating First Nations storytelling into the precinct's daily rhythm, the initiative reflects a shared commitment to embedding culture in meaningful and unexpected ways.

The art-wrapped cleaning trolleys will be on display between 4 and 6 Parramatta Square from 31 August to 4 September, inviting you to experience how art, culture and placemaking can come together in everyday spaces.
