What is a diya?
A diya is a small traditional oil lamp, traditionally made of clay with a cotton wick that burns to produce a small, steady flame. They represent light over dark and good over evil. They are also specifically lit to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity into the home during Diwali.
